Wolverine Power Cooperative is developing a base load power plant near Rogers City. Base load plants operate continuously and with great efficiency.
The cooperative has selected circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology for the plant. CFB technology is defined as a clean coal technology by the U.S. Department of Energy and meets federal and state environmental requirements.
The proposed plant will generate approximately 600 megawatts of electricity. Two units, at 300 megawatts each, are proposed.
The plant will be located on property mined for limestone, which will be used to operate the units more cleanly.
The WCEV power plant will emit only 10 percent of the sulfur dioxide, 20 percent of the mercury and 30 percent of the nitrogen oxide of a typical coal-fired power plant operating in Michigan today.
